Report by Nobilis Media - The use of offshore wind farms to strengthen the security of the maritime border on the Baltic Sea
On December 20, 2022, the next edition of the Szczecin Security Forum took place in Szczecin - a key event during which the most important aspects related to security and defense are discussed. During the December meeting, the main topic was the impact of offshore wind farms (OWF) on the state defense systems and on the state border protection system at sea.
Considering the huge potential of this technology in Poland, its importance for strengthening the energy security, and thus the economic security, of our country should be emphasized. Using the potential of OWE would allow for the provision of new capacities necessary to meet the dynamically growing demand for energy. In addition, the construction of the OWF in the Polish exclusive economic zone (EEZ) is an opportunity to increase the protection of our country.
Offshore wind energy (SHE) is one of the pillars of Poland's energy policy. The Polish energy strategy assumes that by 2040 the total installed OWF capacity in our country will amount to approx. 11 GW. Currently, projects with a total capacity of approx. 8.4 GW are being implemented in Polish maritime areas, of which 5.9 GW will most likely be completed by 2030. Administrative procedures are also underway, as a result of which location permits will be granted for another 11 areas designated in the Plan Spatial Development of Polish Maritime Areas. According to the PWEA analysis, the potential of these 11 areas is approx. 7 GW. OWF is the best available large-scale renewable energy (RES) technology. The PWEA analysis shows that the total potential of OWE in Poland is 33 GW. Currently, work is underway to update Poland's energy policy and it is very likely that the current target for OWE will be increasedaritime Economy and Inland Navigation on the necessary actions in the field of using the OWF to increase Poland's security in the Baltic Sea. The report will be presented next year. The National Security Bureau also expressed interest in the report.
